Pool heat pumps: energy efficiency 101

Energy-EfficientWhen buying a new fridge or washing machine, we take special consideration to determine the energy efficiency. It shouldn’t be any different when purchasing a swimming pool heat pump. But how do you determine how efficient a heat pump is? And how can you optimise that efficiency to have it operating at its absolute best? Sunlover Heating is here to answer these questions and more, so you can keep your Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane pool swimmable all year long.

Determining energy efficiency

Energy efficiency of pool heat pumps is measured by the coefficient of performance (COP). The higher the COP number measured, the more efficient the unit is. COPs readings usually range from 3.0 to 7.0, which converts to an efficiency of 300%–700%. What does this mean? For every unit of electricity used in running the heat pump compressor, you receive 3–7 units of heat. The pool heat pumps available in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne today (such as the Oasis range) offer top-rate energy efficiency.

Size matters

The larger the heat pump, the more power it uses. That’s why it’s a good idea to install the smallest pump needed for your pool. A 750-watt pump is usually sufficient for residential pools. If you’re replacing your pool heat pump, ask one of our pool experts about the best size and efficiency for your particular Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne home pool filtration system.

Keep it clean

Issues such as clogged grates mean the heat pump has to work harder, which uses more energy. It’s always a good idea to make sure your intake grates are free of debris. You should also backwash your pool filters according to manufacturer specifications or switch to a filter that doesn’t require extensive backwashing.

Optimising efficiency

Accurate installation and regular maintenance of your pool heat pump are just a few simple ways that you can maximise its efficiency. For best results, have a qualified pool professional install the heater and perform complicated maintenance and repair tasks.

Your owner’s manual should detail a maintenance schedule or have recommendations for you to follow, but your heat pump will probably need an annual tune up. Because of it’s many moving and electrical parts, it will probably also require a periodic service by an air conditioning technician. With proper installation and maintenance, a pool heat pump can last you upwards of 10 years.
